Behind the scenes

Each summer, the streets of Brixton come alive with colour, creativity and community spirit, thanks to the dedication of the Open Arts Project, the team behind the annual Urban Art Fair. Since its inception in 2002, the Open Arts Project has worked tirelessly to provide a platform for both established and emerging artists to showcase and sell their work directly to the public, transforming the tree-lined Josephine Avenue into an open-air gallery.

As a not-for-profit community initiative, the Open Arts Project is run by a small group of volunteers who are passionate about art, accessibility, and supporting local causes. Their vision is simple but powerful: to bring art out of the gallery and onto the streets. The result is a unique event that not only celebrates artistic talent but also raises thousands of pounds each year for local schools and community groups.

Thanks to the Open Arts Project, the Urban Art Fair has grown into one of South London’s most anticipated cultural events. Their continued commitment ensures that art remains visible, affordable, and rooted in the heart of the community.
